THE ABBEY SCHOOL

The Abbey stands in the centre of Tipperary town. It was founded in 1585 as an Erasmus Smith School and continued as such till 1939. It became a Christian Brothers secondary school in 1941 and has remained so ever since. The last Christian Brother there, Brother Horgan died in 2000 but the Edmund Rice ethos still permeates the school community

THE PROJECT

The Abbey India Project started in 1999 as an Edmund Rice initiative and is one of many Third World Immersion Projects facilitated by the Christian Brothers Education Office.

Every second year since 2000 a number of students travel to Shillong ( Meghalaya, N.E.India) and work there for a number of weeks in Providence School, a school for 250 marginalised children in the area.

The project have always operated on the basis that Third World work is a mix of giving and receiving, of teaching and being taught, .....more
