THE ABBEY SCHOOL

The Abbey stands in the centre of Tipperary town. It was founded in 1585 as an Erasmus Smith School and continued as such till 1939. It became a Christian Brothers secondary school in 1941 and has remained so ever since. The last Christian Brother there, Brother Horgan died in 2000 but the Edmund Rice ethos still permeates the school community

THE PROJECT

The Abbey India Project started in 1999 as an Edmund Rice initiative and is one of many Third World Immersion Projects facilitated by the Christian Brothers Education Office.

Every second year since 2000 a number of students travel to Shillong ( Meghalaya, N.E.India) and work there for a number of weeks in Providence School, a school for 250 marginalised children in the area.

The project have always operated on the basis that Third World work is a mix of giving and receiving, of teaching and being taught, .....more

Location of Shillong

2010 Project

At the end of October 2010,  after much preparation, 7 Abbey students (right) will travel  to work with the children in Providence School, Shillong and give of their energy and their time to improve the lot of the children there.

In preparation, so far, they have  looked into the Edmund Rice vision, Mother Teresa, the Shillong area, the Brothers in India and Providence School.

More preparation dealing with our involvement in Providence (assisting in the teaching of English, receiving instruction in their vocational programme, daily reflection and journalling etc) will follow in September.

The parents of the 7 students assisted by great friends of the Project have undertaken a fundraising campaign in order to cover basic travel and basic accommodation expenses.

In May, a 5-week Silver Circle was conducted in the school community and received widespread support.

At the end of July, a solo cycle from Mizen Head in Cork to Malin Head in Donegal (IRELAND...HEAD TO HEAD) will take place in order to raise funds.

In September, a Buster Race to raise funds has been arranged for Thurles Greyhound Stadium and will again provide a great nights entertainment.
